Module 7: Counterintelligence and Insider Threats
Review all module materials and expectations carefully before beginning your work.
Module Overview
This module examines counterintelligence, the intelligence discipline focused on identifying, preventing, detecting, and neutralizing threats posed by foreign intelligence services, insider threats, espionage activities, and other efforts designed to compromise national security. While intelligence collection seeks to gather information, counterintelligence seeks to protect information, personnel, operations, and organizations from exploitation or compromise.
Students will explore the methods and strategies used by intelligence organizations to detect espionage, investigate insider threats, safeguard classified information, and defend against foreign intelligence collection efforts. The module examines both traditional counterintelligence challenges and emerging threats associated with cyber espionage, insider access, social engineering, and technological vulnerabilities.
Through the examination of major counterintelligence failures and espionage cases, students will assess how organizational weaknesses, security failures, leadership shortcomings, and human behavior can create opportunities for compromise. Particular attention will be given to lessons learned from historical cases and the development of effective strategies to prevent future intelligence breaches. Students will also evaluate the balance between security measures and organizational culture when addressing insider threats.
Important: Carefully review all module materials, instructions, and grading expectations before beginning any activity.
