Module 7 Discussion Activity

Review the discussion overview, learning objectives, prompt, and participation expectations before posting.

Overview

In this discussion, you will examine the role of counterintelligence in protecting sensitive information, personnel, operations, and national security interests. Counterintelligence professionals work to detect, deter, and neutralize threats posed by foreign intelligence services, insider threats, espionage activities, and unauthorized disclosures of information.

This activity asks you to evaluate contemporary counterintelligence challenges and consider how organizations can balance security requirements with employee trust, privacy, and organizational culture. You will explore the effectiveness of surveillance, monitoring programs, and insider threat initiatives in preventing security breaches.

Learning Objectives

(These are not the questions to be answered. Please review and answer the Discussion Topic(s).)

  • LO1: Explain the role of counterintelligence activities in protecting organizations and national security interests. (SLO3)
  • LO2: Assess intelligence collection successes, failures, and challenges associated with insider threats and counterintelligence operations. (SLO7)
Discussion Topic(s)
  • What are the greatest challenges in counterintelligence today, and how can organizations address them effectively?
  • How have technological advances, remote work environments, social media, and cyber threats changed the counterintelligence landscape?
  • Does increased surveillance of employees prevent insider threats, or does it risk harming workplace culture, employee morale, and trust?
  • What strategies should organizations use to identify and prevent insider threats while maintaining an ethical and productive work environment?
  • Consider a real-world espionage, insider threat, or unauthorized disclosure case. What lessons can intelligence professionals and organizations learn from that example?
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • You may use AI tools to research historical espionage cases, insider threat incidents, or contemporary counterintelligence challenges. Any information obtained through AI should be verified using course materials and credible sources.
  • Counterintelligence requires careful evaluation of evidence and competing explanations. Use AI as a learning resource rather than a decision-maker, and ensure that your discussion post reflects your own analysis and conclusions.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
Important Reminder

Important: Submitting incomplete or placeholder responses may result in a grade deduction based on course policies.
