Module Overview

This module examines Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT), one of the fastest-growing intelligence collection disciplines in the modern information environment. OSINT involves collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information that is publicly available through sources such as news media, government reports, academic publications, social media platforms, websites, commercial databases, and publicly accessible records.

Students will explore how intelligence organizations use publicly available information to identify threats, monitor global events, support investigations, track extremist activity, assess foreign developments, and supplement classified intelligence sources. The module examines the growing importance of OSINT in an era where enormous amounts of information are generated and shared daily through digital technologies and online platforms.

While OSINT offers significant advantages in accessibility, speed, and cost-effectiveness, it also presents important challenges related to information reliability, misinformation, disinformation, verification, and analytical bias. Students will evaluate the strengths and limitations of OSINT and consider how intelligence professionals balance publicly available information with classified sources to produce accurate and actionable intelligence. The module also explores ethical concerns associated with monitoring publicly available information, particularly within social media environments.
