Module 6 Writing Assignment

Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.

Overview

In this assignment, you will examine the growing role of Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) in intelligence collection and analysis. OSINT involves gathering, evaluating, and analyzing information that is publicly available through sources such as news reports, websites, social media platforms, academic publications, government documents, and commercial data services.

You will analyze a real-world intelligence operation, investigation, or crisis in which OSINT played a significant role. Through this analysis, you will evaluate both the strengths and limitations of open-source information and consider how OSINT complements other intelligence collection disciplines.

Student Learning Objectives

(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)

  • LO1: Explain the role of Open-Source Intelligence within the broader intelligence collection process. (SLO1)
  • LO2: Assess the strengths, limitations, and evolving significance of OSINT in modern intelligence operations. (SLO5)
Assignment Topic

Select a real-world intelligence operation, investigation, security crisis, or national security event in which Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) played a significant role. Examples may include tracking extremist networks, monitoring election interference, identifying disinformation campaigns, investigating cyber incidents, documenting military activities, or another instructor-approved case study.

Begin by describing the event or operation and explaining how publicly available information was collected and analyzed. Discuss the specific OSINT sources that were used and explain how they contributed to understanding the situation.

Next, evaluate the advantages of OSINT in the case study. Consider factors such as accessibility, speed, cost-effectiveness, transparency, global reach, the ability to gather large volumes of information, and the contribution of social media and digital platforms to intelligence collection.

Then analyze the limitations of OSINT. Consider challenges such as misinformation, disinformation, source verification, information overload, data reliability, manipulation of online content, or the difficulty of determining credibility.

Conclude by assessing whether OSINT alone would have been sufficient to address the situation or whether it needed to be combined with other intelligence disciplines to produce reliable intelligence.

Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • You may use AI tools to identify OSINT case studies, locate examples of publicly available information sources, or clarify intelligence terminology. Any information obtained through AI should be verified using course materials and credible sources.
  • Because OSINT often involves evaluating information reliability, you should critically assess any information generated by AI. Your paper must reflect your own analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of open-source intelligence rather than relying on AI-generated conclusions.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your assignment.

  • Your paper should be 2-3 pages, using APA style, including 12 font and 1-inch margins.
  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
  • Abstract NOT needed.
  • Submissions are checked against a Plagiarism Checker and AI Detector.
    • Direct quotes should not exceed 15% of the total paper.
    • AI Usage – you must use AI ethically. Papers written by an AI is cheating.
Submission Guidelines
  • Submit your assignment through the designated submission area.
  • Ensure your file is in Microsoft Word (.docx) or PDF format.
  • Review the grading rubric before submitting your work.
Important Reminder

Important: All work must be your own. Follow course policies regarding academic integrity and the use of outside sources or tools.
