Module 5 Writing Assignment

Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.

Overview

In this assignment, you will examine the role of Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) in modern intelligence and counterterrorism operations. GEOINT combines imagery, mapping, geographic information systems, and location-based analysis to provide intelligence professionals with a deeper understanding of physical environments, potential threats, and operational opportunities.

You will analyze a specific counterterrorism operation that relied on GEOINT capabilities and evaluate how technological tools contributed to mission success. You will also consider the ethical concerns associated with the collection and use of geospatial information in intelligence operations.

Student Learning Objectives

(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)

  • LO1: Explain the role of GEOINT and related collection technologies in supporting intelligence operations. (SLO2)
  • LO2: Assess the evolution, effectiveness, and ethical implications of geospatial intelligence collection. (SLO5)
Assignment Topic

Select a counterterrorism operation in which Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) played a significant role. Possible examples include Operation Neptune Spear, drone-based counterterrorism operations, surveillance and targeting missions, or another instructor-approved operation.

Begin by describing the operation and explaining its objectives. Discuss how GEOINT contributed to planning, surveillance, target identification, operational decision-making, or mission execution.

Next, analyze the technological tools that supported the operation. Consider the use of satellites, aerial imagery, drones, remote sensing technologies, mapping systems, geospatial databases, or other intelligence collection platforms. Explain how these tools improved situational awareness and contributed to the operation’s success.

Evaluate both the strengths and limitations of GEOINT during the operation. Consider issues such as accuracy, timeliness, environmental factors, intelligence integration, or dependence on technological systems.

Finally, reflect on the ethical implications of using GEOINT in intelligence and counterterrorism operations. Consider concerns related to privacy, surveillance, civilian impacts, data collection practices, government accountability, or the use of remotely operated systems.

Conclude by assessing whether the intelligence benefits of GEOINT outweigh the ethical concerns associated with its use.

Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • You may use AI tools to identify GEOINT technologies, locate background information on counterterrorism operations, or explain geospatial intelligence concepts. Any information obtained through AI should be verified using course materials and credible sources.
  • Because this assignment requires evaluation of ethical issues and intelligence effectiveness, your analysis and conclusions must be your own. AI may assist with research and organization, but the final paper must reflect your independent critical thinking and writing.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your assignment.

  • Your paper should be 2-3 pages, using APA style, including 12 font and 1-inch margins.
  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
  • Abstract NOT needed.
  • Submissions are checked against a Plagiarism Checker and AI Detector.
    • Direct quotes should not exceed 15% of the total paper.
    • AI Usage – you must use AI ethically. Papers written by an AI is cheating.
Submission Guidelines
  • Submit your assignment through the designated submission area.
  • Ensure your file is in Microsoft Word (.docx) or PDF format.
  • Review the grading rubric before submitting your work.
Important Reminder

Important: All work must be your own. Follow course policies regarding academic integrity and the use of outside sources or tools.
