Module Overview

This module focuses on Human Intelligence (HUMINT), one of the oldest and most important intelligence collection disciplines. HUMINT involves gathering information through human sources, including informants, confidential sources, undercover operatives, defectors, diplomatic contacts, and intelligence officers. Despite significant advances in technology, HUMINT remains a critical component of intelligence collection because it often provides insights that cannot be obtained through technical means alone.

Students will examine how HUMINT is collected, managed, and evaluated within intelligence operations. The module explores the strengths and limitations of relying on human sources, including issues related to source credibility, deception, trust, motivation, and counterintelligence threats. Students will also analyze the risks faced by intelligence officers and sources operating in complex and often dangerous environments.

In addition, students will consider the ethical and operational challenges associated with HUMINT collection and explore how the discipline continues to evolve in the digital age. Through case studies and applied analysis, students will gain an understanding of why HUMINT remains an essential intelligence collection discipline despite the growing influence of technology-based collection methods.
