Module 3 Writing Assignment
Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.
Overview
In this assignment, you will analyze the role of Human Intelligence (HUMINT) in intelligence operations. HUMINT remains one of the oldest and most valuable intelligence disciplines because it relies on information collected directly from people. Despite advances in technology, intelligence agencies continue to depend on human sources to provide insights that may not be available through technical collection methods.
You will evaluate how HUMINT contributes to intelligence collection, examine the risks and ethical challenges associated with human source operations, and consider how the digital age is changing the way intelligence agencies recruit, manage, and protect human sources.
Student Learning Objectives
(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)
- LO1: Differentiate HUMINT from other intelligence collection disciplines and explain its role in intelligence operations. (SLO1)
- LO2: Assess the strengths, risks, ethical challenges, and evolving role of HUMINT in contemporary intelligence collection. (SLO5)
Assignment Topic
Select a specific intelligence operation in which Human Intelligence (HUMINT) played a significant role. Examples may include Cold War espionage operations, counterterrorism efforts, double-agent operations, counterintelligence investigations, or another instructor-approved case.
Begin by explaining the background of the operation and describing how HUMINT was used to collect information. Discuss the value that human sources, informants, undercover operatives, or recruited assets provided during the operation.
Next, analyze the risks and ethical dilemmas faced by intelligence agencies and operatives. Consider issues such as deception, betrayal, recruitment methods, source reliability, operational security, personal safety, civil liberties, or the treatment of human sources.
Finally, reflect on how HUMINT is evolving in the digital age. Consider how social media, digital surveillance, biometric technologies, artificial intelligence, cyber intelligence, and global connectivity are changing both the opportunities and challenges associated with human intelligence collection.
Conclude by evaluating whether HUMINT remains essential in an era increasingly dominated by technological intelligence collection methods.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
- You may use AI tools to identify HUMINT case studies, clarify intelligence terminology, or locate potential research directions. Information obtained through AI should be verified using course materials and credible academic or governmental sources.
- Because this assignment requires analysis of ethical issues and operational risks, your conclusions and arguments must be your own. AI may assist with brainstorming and organization, but the final paper must reflect your own critical thinking and writing.
Directions
Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your assignment.
- Your paper should be 2-3 pages, using APA style, including 12 font and 1-inch margins.
- A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
- Abstract NOT needed.
- Submissions are checked against a Plagiarism Checker and AI Detector.
- Direct quotes should not exceed 15% of the total paper.
- AI Usage – you must use AI ethically. Papers written by an AI is cheating.
