Overview
In this assignment, you will examine how intelligence collection influenced a major historical event. Throughout history, intelligence has shaped military operations, diplomatic decisions, strategic planning, and national security outcomes. Effective intelligence collection can provide decision-makers with critical information, while intelligence failures can have significant consequences.
You are expected to analyze a historical event and evaluate the role intelligence collection played in shaping its outcome. By examining both successes and challenges, you will gain a deeper understanding of how intelligence collection contributes to national and international security efforts.

Assignment Topic
Select one major historical event in which intelligence collection played a significant role. Examples include the Cuban Missile Crisis, World War II cryptanalysis efforts, the Cold War, the Battle of Midway, the September 11 attacks, or another instructor-approved event.
In your paper, explain the historical background of the event and describe the intelligence collection activities that occurred. Discuss how intelligence influenced the decisions made by political leaders, military commanders, or intelligence agencies.
Your paper must identify and discuss at least one intelligence success and one intelligence challenge associated with the event. Consider issues such as collection limitations, analytical errors, communication problems, technological constraints, or organizational barriers.
Conclude by evaluating the overall impact intelligence collection had on the outcome of the event and discuss any lessons that modern intelligence agencies can learn from this historical example.
