Module 11 Writing Assignment

Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.

Overview

In this assignment, you will examine how emerging technologies are transforming intelligence collection and analysis. Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing have the potential to significantly alter how intelligence agencies gather information, process large data sets, identify threats, and support decision-making. While these technologies create new opportunities, they also raise important ethical, legal, and operational concerns.

You will compare and contrast the impact of AI and quantum computing on intelligence operations and evaluate how ethical frameworks can help guide the responsible use of these powerful technologies.

Student Learning Objectives

(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)

  • LO1: Assess how emerging technologies influence intelligence collection, analysis, and decision-making processes. (SLO8)
  • LO2: Evaluate the evolution of intelligence collection methods and the ethical challenges associated with new technologies. (SLO5)
Assignment Topic

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and quantum computing are frequently identified as two of the most transformative technologies affecting the future of intelligence collection. While both technologies offer significant advantages, they also introduce new risks, ethical concerns, and policy challenges.

Compare and contrast the impact of AI and quantum computing on intelligence collection methods and intelligence outcomes. Begin by explaining the basic capabilities of each technology and discussing how intelligence agencies could use them to support collection, analysis, prediction, surveillance, cybersecurity, threat detection, or decision-making.

Analyze the potential advantages that AI and quantum computing provide to intelligence organizations. Consider factors such as data processing speed, pattern recognition, predictive analytics, automation, encryption analysis, intelligence integration, and operational efficiency.

Next, evaluate the limitations and risks associated with these technologies. Consider concerns such as algorithmic bias, inaccurate outputs, overreliance on automated systems, cybersecurity vulnerabilities, privacy implications, the potential impact of quantum computing on encryption, and the possibility of unintended consequences.

Discuss how ethical frameworks can guide the responsible use of emerging technologies within intelligence operations. Consider principles such as accountability, transparency, proportionality, fairness, human oversight, protection of civil liberties, and responsible decision-making.

Conclude by evaluating which technology is likely to have the greater long-term impact on intelligence collection and explain why.

Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • You may use AI tools to research emerging technologies, clarify technical concepts, or identify examples of AI and quantum computing applications in intelligence operations. Any information obtained through AI should be verified using course materials and credible sources.
  • This assignment specifically examines the opportunities and risks associated with AI. While AI may assist with research and organization, your evaluation of technological impacts, ethical concerns, and future implications must be your own original analysis.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your assignment.

  • Your paper should be 2-3 pages, using APA style, including 12 font and 1-inch margins.
  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
  • Abstract NOT needed.
  • Submissions are checked against a Plagiarism Checker and AI Detector.
    • Direct quotes should not exceed 15% of the total paper.
    • AI Usage – you must use AI ethically. Papers written by an AI is cheating.
Submission Guidelines
  • Submit your assignment through the designated submission area.
  • Ensure your file is in Microsoft Word (.docx) or PDF format.
  • Review the grading rubric before submitting your work.
Important Reminder

Important: All work must be your own. Follow course policies regarding academic integrity and the use of outside sources or tools.
