Module 10 Discussion Activity
Review the discussion overview, learning objectives, prompt, and participation expectations before posting.
Overview
In this discussion, you will examine how cyber threats have become a central concern for governments, intelligence agencies, and international organizations. Cyberattacks can target critical infrastructure, government systems, private industry, and democratic institutions, often creating diplomatic tensions and raising questions about attribution, retaliation, and international norms.
This activity asks you to evaluate the relationship between cybersecurity, intelligence collection, and public trust. You will consider how cyber incidents influence diplomatic relations, how intelligence agencies respond to emerging threats, and whether transparency strengthens or weakens national security efforts.
Learning Objectives
(These are not the questions to be answered. Please review and answer the Discussion Topic(s).)
- LO1: Evaluate the role of intelligence collection in addressing contemporary cybersecurity threats and national security challenges. (SLO8)
- LO2: Assess intelligence strategies used to identify, analyze, and respond to cyber threats in a rapidly evolving security environment. (SLO6)
Discussion Topic(s)
- In what ways do cyberattacks influence diplomatic relations between nations? Provide examples of recent incidents.
- Why is attribution often one of the most difficult aspects of responding to cyberattacks, and how does uncertainty affect diplomatic or military responses?
- How does public perception of cybersecurity threats affect the strategies employed by intelligence agencies?
- Should intelligence agencies prioritize transparency when discussing cyber threats with the public, or can too much transparency create additional security risks?
- How should governments balance public awareness, national security, and operational secrecy when responding to significant cyber incidents?
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
- You may use AI tools to identify recent cyber incidents, summarize cybersecurity concepts, or explore international responses to cyber threats. Information obtained through AI should be verified using course materials and credible sources.
- Cybersecurity issues often involve incomplete information and competing interpretations. Use AI as a research aid rather than an authority, and ensure that your discussion post reflects your own analysis of the intelligence, policy, and security implications involved.
Directions
Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.
- Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
- Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
- Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
Important Reminder
Important: Submitting incomplete or placeholder responses may result in a grade deduction based on course policies.
