Module 10 Writing Assignment
Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.
Overview
In this assignment, you will examine the growing importance of cyber intelligence in protecting national security. Governments, intelligence agencies, private organizations, and critical infrastructure operators face increasingly sophisticated cyber threats that can disrupt services, compromise sensitive information, influence public opinion, and threaten national interests.
You will analyze a significant cyber event and evaluate its impact on intelligence collection, cybersecurity, and national security. You will also assess the role of interagency coordination in responding to cyber threats and explore strategies that can improve collaboration among intelligence, law enforcement, military, and private-sector partners.
Student Learning Objectives
(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)
- LO1: Evaluate the role of cyber intelligence in supporting contemporary intelligence and national security missions. (SLO8)
- LO2: Assess intelligence management strategies and interagency coordination efforts used to address cyber threats. (SLO6)
Assignment Topic
Select a significant cyber event and evaluate its implications for intelligence collection, cybersecurity, and national security. Examples may include the Equifax data breach, WannaCry ransomware attack, SolarWinds compromise, Colonial Pipeline attack, NotPetya malware incident, or another instructor-approved cyber event.
Begin by describing the event and explaining how it occurred. Identify the key actors involved, the vulnerabilities that were exploited, and the immediate consequences of the incident.
Next, analyze the impact of the event on national security and intelligence practices. Consider issues such as intelligence collection, cyber defense, critical infrastructure protection, information sharing, threat attribution, cybersecurity policy, or public confidence in digital systems.
Evaluate the role of cyber intelligence in detecting, understanding, responding to, or mitigating the threat. Discuss how intelligence agencies and cybersecurity organizations gathered, analyzed, and shared information related to the incident.
Then examine the importance of interagency coordination in responding to cyber threats. Consider the roles of intelligence agencies, law enforcement organizations, military entities, homeland security agencies, regulatory bodies, and private-sector partners. Analyze any coordination successes or shortcomings that emerged during the response.
Finally, propose recommendations for improving collaboration among agencies and organizations responsible for cybersecurity and intelligence operations. Consider information-sharing mechanisms, joint operations, communication systems, public-private partnerships, training initiatives, or organizational reforms.
Conclude by evaluating whether effective interagency cooperation is now as important as technological capability in addressing modern cyber threats.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
- You may use AI tools to identify cyber incidents, explain technical cybersecurity concepts, or locate background information related to cyber intelligence. Any information obtained through AI should be verified using course materials and credible sources.
- Cyber incidents often involve complex technical, legal, and organizational issues. AI may assist with research and organization, but your analysis of the event, its national security implications, and your recommendations for improving collaboration must be your own work.
Directions
Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your assignment.
- Your paper should be 2-3 pages, using APA style, including 12 font and 1-inch margins.
- A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
- Abstract NOT needed.
