Overview

In this discussion, you will examine how intelligence collection supports national security, public safety, and informed decision-making in an increasingly complex global environment. You will explore how emerging threats, technological advances, and international events influence intelligence priorities and shape intelligence gathering efforts.

This activity asks you to analyze and apply course concepts by connecting them to real-world examples involving counterterrorism, cybersecurity, geopolitical competition, or other contemporary security challenges.

  • LO1: Explain the role of intelligence collection in supporting current intelligence missions and national security objectives. (SLO8)
  • LO2: Identify and describe intelligence collection activities used to address modern security threats and challenges. (SLO3)
Discussion Topic(s)
  • Why is intelligence collection critical in today’s global security environment?
  • Consider examples such as counterterrorism, cybersecurity, or geopolitical tensions. How does intelligence collection help government agencies anticipate, prevent, or respond to these threats?
  • Provide at least one current or historical example that demonstrates the importance of intelligence collection in protecting national interests.
  • In your opinion, what intelligence challenge poses the greatest risk to the United States today, and why?

  • If you use AI to assist your learning, verify all information using course materials, assigned readings, or credible sources. Submitting AI-generated content as your original work is not permitted and may violate course academic integrity policies.

Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
