Module 9 Writing Assignment

Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.

Overview
Criminological perspectives differ in how they explain the relationship between society, law, power, and crime. Consensus, pluralistic, and conflict perspectives offer competing explanations for how laws are created and enforced, while critical approaches such as Marxist, radical, and critical criminology examine the role of inequality and power in shaping crime and criminal justice responses.
In this assignment, you will compare these perspectives and analyze their implications for criminal justice policy and practice.
Student Learning Objectives

(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)

  • LO1: Compare consensus, pluralistic, and conflict perspectives in explaining crime and criminal justice responses (SLO6).
  • LO2: Analyze Marxist, radical, and critical criminological approaches and their implications for policy and practice (SLO6).
Assignment Topic
Criminological perspectives provide different lenses for understanding crime and social control.
In your paper, address the following:
  • Explain the key differences among the consensus, pluralistic, and conflict perspectives on society and crime.
  • Analyze how each perspective explains the creation and enforcement of criminal law.
  • Define Marxist criminology and explain how it relates to broader conflict perspectives.
  • Compare Marxist criminology with radical criminology and critical criminology, noting key similarities and differences.
  • Evaluate how these perspectives influence criminal justice policy debates or practitioner decision making.
Rather than focusing on personal preference, ground your analysis in criminological concepts and real-world implications.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to clarify distinctions among consensus, pluralistic, and conflict perspectives. Do not use AI to write sections of the paper.
  • Use AI to help identify examples of policies or practices associated with critical or conflict-based criminological approaches, then independently analyze those examples.
