Overview
Social process and social development perspectives both explain criminal behavior as something shaped over time through interaction, learning, and life experiences. Labeling theory adds an important dimension by showing how social reactions can reinforce or reduce criminal behavior.
In this assignment, you will compare these perspectives and analyze how labeling, both negative and positive, affects behavior and criminal justice outcomes.

Assignment Topic
Criminological theories differ in how they explain the development and persistence of criminal behavior.
In your paper, address the following:
  • Explain the key differences between social process and social development perspectives.
  • Identify the types of theories commonly associated with each perspective.
  • Analyze the role of labeling in shaping behavior, with particular attention to the consequences of negative labels.
  • Provide examples of how positive labels are imposed in everyday settings, such as schools, families, or criminal justice programs. Examine why it is often difficult to replace negative labels with positive ones, especially for individuals with prior system involvement.
Your response should emphasize analysis and practitioner relevance rather than summary.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
