Overview
Research examining the relationship between intelligence and crime has generated significant debate within criminology. Much of this debate centers not only on findings, but on how intelligence is defined, measured, and used to support broader claims about criminal behavior.
In this discussion, you will critically examine how intelligence is conceptualized and operationalized in criminological research and evaluate the implications of these choices for criminal justice practice and policy.

  • LO1: Analyze how intelligence is defined and measured in criminological research and its relationship to biological theories of crime (SLO3).
  • LO2: Examine how assumptions about intelligence intersect with demographic factors such as social class, race, and opportunity, and assess the implications for criminal justice policy and practice (SLO10).

After reviewing your selected reading, address the following:
  • Explain how the authors define or conceptualize intelligence in their work.
  • Analyze whether IQ or similar measures are treated as valid indicators of intelligence, and why this choice matters.
  • Evaluate how intelligence is operationalized in the study and whether this operationalization supports the authors’ claims about crime.
  • Discuss the implications of linking intelligence and crime for criminal justice policy or practice.
Your response should focus on critical analysis of research assumptions and methodology rather than personal opinion.

  • Use AI to clarify terminology related to intelligence testing or research methodology. Do not use AI to generate your discussion response.
  • Use AI to help identify critiques of intelligence measurement in criminology, then independently apply those critiques to your selected reading.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
