Overview
Advances in genetics have raised important questions about human behavior, responsibility, and criminal justice policy. The Human Genome Project provides a framework for examining how genetic information is interpreted and applied across multiple fields, including criminology.
In this prep, you will engage with a scenario related to genetic research and analyze its implications for crime causation, policy, and ethical decision making in criminal justice.

  • LO2: Evaluate the ethical and policy implications of applying genetic information in criminal justice contexts (SLO10).
Discussion Topic(s)
Visit the Human Genome Project website and review the assigned scenario document provided in this module.
After selecting one scenario, address the following:
  • Briefly describe the scenario and the genetic issue it raises.
  • Analyze how genetic explanations of behavior could influence criminal justice policy or practice.
  • Evaluate potential ethical concerns related to the use of genetic information in criminal justice decision making.
  • Explain whether the scenario aligns more closely with the social problems perspective or the individual responsibility perspective, and why.
Your response should emphasize analysis and practitioner relevance rather than technical genetic detail.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to clarify genetic concepts or terminology encountered in the Human Genome Project materials. Do not use AI to generate your discussion response.
  • Use AI to help identify ethical concerns related to genetics and criminal justice, then independently analyze those concerns using course concepts.

Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
