Overview

In this final research paper, you will apply criminological theory and research to a real-world criminal justice issue. This assignment is designed to strengthen your ability to analyze criminal behavior, connect theory to practice, evaluate evidence, and develop a practitioner-focused conclusion supported by research.

You are expected to select one approved topic, apply at least two criminological theories from the course, use scholarly evidence to support your analysis, and connect your findings to criminal justice policy or practice. Focus on developing a clear argument, using appropriate research, and demonstrating your understanding of criminology as a tool for informed criminal justice decision-making.

Your paper must clearly define the criminological problem connected to your selected topic, apply at least two criminological theories from the course, use evidence to support your analysis, and explain how the issue connects to criminal justice policy or practitioner decision-making.

Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your assignment.

  • Your paper should be 4 to 5 pages of content, double-spaced. The Title Page and Reference Page do not count toward the required page length.
  • Use Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins, and APA 7th edition format throughout the paper.
  • Your paper must include a clear introduction, thesis, organized body sections, and a conclusion.
  • Apply at least two criminological theories from this course to interpret behavior, patterns, policies, or outcomes connected to your selected topic.
  • Use a minimum of 3 scholarly sources to support your analysis.
  • Use research evidence to support your argument and identify any limitations in the research where appropriate.
  • Analyze how policy or practice responds to the issue and assess effectiveness, challenges, or limitations.
  • Conclude with a practitioner-focused insight or recommendation grounded in your analysis.
  • Use direct quotations carefully. Direct quotes should make up no more than 10 to 15% of the paper. Prioritize your own analysis.
  • Proofread your work for clarity, grammar, organization, APA formatting, and overall quality before submission.

Tip: A strong paper explains why each theory fits the selected topic and what the analysis suggests for criminal justice practice. Avoid summary-only writing.

  • Ensure your file is submitted as a .docx or .pdf unless otherwise directed by the instructor.
  • Review the grading rubric before submitting your work.
  • Verify that your paper includes APA in-text citations and a complete APA Reference Page.
  • Submit your final paper by the deadline listed in the syllabus.
