Overview
Terrorist and extremist organizations can be analyzed using the same criminological theories applied to other forms of organized and ideological crime. Applying theory helps criminal justice professionals move beyond labels and better understand motivation, recruitment, group dynamics, and persistence over time.
In this discussion, you will analyze a terrorist or extremist organization using multiple criminological theories covered earlier in the course.
Learning Objectives

  • LO1: Apply criminological theories to explain organized and ideological forms of crime, including terrorism (SLO9).
  • LO2: Analyze how critical and mainstream criminological perspectives help explain group-based criminal behavior (SLO6).
Discussion Topic(s)
Select one of the following groups:
  • Continuity Irish Republican Army (CIRA)
  • Hamas Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso)
  • Animal Liberation Front (ALF)
  • Three Percenters
After selecting your organization, address the following:
  • Provide a brief factual overview of the organization, including its origins, goals, and general methods.
  • Apply at least three criminological theories discussed in previous modules to analyze the organization’s behavior, structure, or persistence.
  • For each theory, explain why it is appropriate for understanding this group rather than simply naming it.
  • Discuss what these theories suggest about recruitment, motivation, or prevention strategies relevant to criminal justice or counterterrorism practice.
Your response should emphasize analytical reasoning and theory application rather than opinion or political judgment.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to clarify background information about the selected organization or to review the core assumptions of criminological theories. Do not use AI to generate your discussion response.
  • Use AI to help brainstorm how specific theories might apply to organized or ideological crime, then independently evaluate and apply those theories using course concepts.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
