Overview
High-tech crime presents unique challenges for criminal justice professionals because it often involves anonymity, global reach, and nontraditional forms of opportunity. Applying criminological theory to these offenses helps practitioners understand offender motivation, decision making, and prevention strategies in digital environments.
In this discussion, you will apply criminological theory to high-tech offending and defend why specific theories are well suited to explaining this form of crime.

  • LO1: Apply criminological theories to explain major crime typologies, with emphasis on high-tech crime (SLO9).
  • LO2: Analyze how offender behavior and opportunity structures evolve with technological and social change (SLO5).
Discussion Topic(s)
Select three criminological theories discussed in previous modules and analyze how each explains the behavior of individuals who commit high-tech crimes, such as hacking, identity theft, online fraud, or cyber-enabled theft.
In your response:  
  • Identify the three theories you selected.
  • Explain why each theory is appropriate for analyzing high-tech offending rather than traditional street crime.
  • Apply each theory to the behavior, motivation, or decision making of high-tech offenders.
  • Discuss what each theory suggests about prevention, enforcement, or policy responses to high-tech crime.
Students are expected to defend their theory selection using course concepts and evidence rather than general statements.

  • Use AI to brainstorm examples of high-tech crime types, then independently apply criminological theory to analyze offender behavior.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
