Module 12 Writing Assignment

Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.

Overview
Not all individuals who commit property crimes do so in the same way or for the same reasons. Criminology distinguishes between different offender types based on experience, motivation, and patterns of offending. Understanding these distinctions helps practitioners anticipate behavior, assess risk, and design effective prevention strategies.
In this assignment, you will analyze offender typologies related to property crime and examine how residential burglars make decisions about target selection.
Student Learning Objectives

(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)

  • LO1: Analyze major crime typologies and offender classifications related to property crime (SLO9).
  • LO2: Examine how criminal behavior and opportunity structures change across the life course and social context (SLO5).
Assignment Topic
Property crime offenders vary in motivation, skill, and persistence.
In your paper, address the following:
  • Explain the differences among a professional criminal, a persistent thief, and an occasional offender, focusing on patterns of behavior rather than labels alone.
  • Analyze how these offender types differ in terms of planning, risk tolerance, and criminal experience.
  • Explain how residential burglars select targets, including factors such as opportunity, visibility, guardianship, and perceived reward.
  • Evaluate how understanding offender typologies and target selection can inform crime prevention strategies and practitioner decision making.
Your response should emphasize analysis and application rather than simple definition.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to clarify terminology related to offender typologies or routine activity concepts. Do not use AI to write sections of the paper.
  • Use AI to help identify common burglary patterns discussed in criminological research, then independently analyze those patterns using course concepts.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your assignment.

  • Your paper should be 2-3 pages, using APA style, including 12 font and 1-inch margins.
  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
  • Abstract NOT needed.
  • Submissions are checked against a Plagiarism Checker and AI Detector.
    • Direct quotes should not exceed 15% of the total paper.
    • AI Usage – you must use AI ethically. Papers written by an AI is cheating.
