Module Overview
This module examines violent crime through the lens of situational context, rationality, and constrained decision making. The discussion activity focuses on comparing crime patterns on college campuses and in surrounding communities, using official crime data to evaluate whether violent crime can be understood as a rational activity. Students are asked to interpret data carefully, account for reporting differences, and apply criminological theory to real-world contexts.
The writing assignment builds on this foundation by analyzing the relationship between alcohol consumption and homicide and examining why victims of intimate-partner violence may remain in abusive relationships despite escalating harm. As you complete this module, focus on how social, environmental, and structural constraints shape both offender and victim behavior, and consider the implications for criminal justice policy, prevention strategies, and practitioner responses.
