Module 11 Writing Assignment

Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.

Overview
Violent crime is often influenced by situational factors, social context, and structural constraints. Research on alcohol consumption and homicide highlights how environmental and social conditions can shape violent outcomes. Similarly, intimate-partner violence illustrates how victims’ choices are constrained by psychological, social, and economic factors.
In this assignment, you will analyze how violence is influenced by conditions that complicate assumptions about rational decision making.
Student Learning Objectives

(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)

  • LO1: Analyze how situational and social factors, such as alcohol consumption, influence violent crime (SLO5).
  • LO2: Examine how demographic and social factors, including gender, social class, and relational context, affect victim decision making in cases of intimate-partner violence (SLO10).
Assignment Topic
Violence does not occur in a vacuum and is rarely explained by a single factor.
In your paper, address the following:
  • Summarize Robert Nash Parker’s research on the relationship between alcohol consumption and homicide, focusing on the mechanisms that link alcohol availability or use to violent outcomes.
  • Analyze how this research challenges or complicates the idea that violent crime is always a rational activity.
  • Examine reasons why victims of intimate-partner violence may remain with an abusive partner, even as violence escalates.
  • Evaluate how these factors limit victim choice and what this suggests for criminal justice policy and practitioner response.
Your response should emphasize analysis, theory application, and practitioner relevance rather than description alone.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to clarify Parker’s core research findings or terminology related to alcohol and violence. Do not use AI to write sections of the paper.
  • Use AI to help identify criminological or sociological explanations for intimate-partner violence, then independently analyze those explanations using course concepts.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your assignment.

  • Your paper should be 2-3 pages, using APA style, including 12 font and 1-inch margins.
  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
  • Abstract NOT needed.
  • Submissions are checked against a Plagiarism Checker and AI Detector.
    • Direct quotes should not exceed 15% of the total paper.
    • AI Usage – you must use AI ethically. Papers written by an AI is cheating.
Submission Guidelines
