Overview
Modern criminal justice systems increasingly recognize the importance of victims, not only as witnesses but as individuals who have experienced harm. Restorative justice and victims’ rights initiatives represent efforts to address that harm while balancing offender accountability and public safety.
In this assignment, you will analyze key concepts related to restorative justice and victims’ rights and examine how these approaches are applied in criminal justice policy and practice.
Student Learning Objectives
(These objectives support the assignment and are not the questions to be answered.)
- LO1: Analyze restorative justice principles and victim-centered approaches within the criminal justice system (SLO5).
- LO2: Examine the development and recognition of victims’ rights and their impact on criminal justice policy and practice (SLO7).
Assignment Topic
Victim-centered approaches have reshaped how crime and justice are understood in the United States.
In your paper, address the following:
- Explain the core principles of restorative justice and analyze what it means to “make the victim whole again.”
- Distinguish between victim compensation and victim restitution, and explain how each functions within the criminal justice system.
- Analyze the historical development of victims’ rights in the United States, including how these rights are formally recognized today.
- Evaluate the strengths and limitations of victim-centered approaches in achieving justice, accountability, and healing.
Your response should emphasize analysis, policy implications, and practitioner relevance rather than simple definition or historical listing.
