Overview

Criminal justice professionals work within legal definitions of crime, but those definitions change over time in response to social values, technology, and policy priorities. In this discussion, you will examine how crime is defined, how those definitions evolve, and why those changes matter for practitioners working in policing, courts, corrections, and policy. Rather than offering opinions, you will analyze how shifting definitions of crime influence professional roles, enforcement priorities, and the field of criminology itself.

  • LO1: Analyze how crime is formally defined and how those definitions shape the field of criminology and criminal justice practice (SLO7).
  • LO2: Examine how social, legal, and technological changes influence the evolution of crime and practitioner responses (SLO7).
Discussion Topic(s)
    • Crime is not a fixed concept. Behaviors that were once legal have become criminalized, while others have been decriminalized or reclassified over time.
      Using at least one concrete example, address the following:
      • How is crime formally defined within the criminal justice system, and who has the authority to define it?
      • How have changes in law, social norms, or technology reshaped what is considered criminal behavior?
      • How do these shifts affect the work of criminal justice practitioners and the focus of criminological study?
      Your response should emphasize analysis and application rather than personal opinion.
    Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
    • Use AI to help clarify the legal definition of crime or to distinguish between criminal law, deviance, and social norms. Do not use AI to generate your discussion post.
    • Use AI to brainstorm real-world examples of behaviors that have changed legal status over time, then independently select and analyze one example using course concepts.

    • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
    • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
    • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
