Northern Essex Community College
Module 9 Discussion Activity
Review the discussion overview, learning objectives, prompt, and participation expectations before posting.
Overview
Restorative justice programs represent an alternative approach to traditional punishment by emphasizing accountability, repair of harm, and reintegration into community life. Understanding how these programs operate and evaluating their outcomes is critical for practitioners considering alternatives to conventional sanctions.
In this discussion, you will research a restorative justice program in the United States and analyze its structure, outcomes, and implications for offender reintegration.
Learning Objectives
(These are not the questions to be answered. Please review and answer the Discussion Topic(s).)
- LO1: Analyze how restorative justice programs support offender reintegration and reduce recidivism (SLO5).
- LO2: Evaluate program outcomes and hypothesize why specific restorative justice approaches succeed or encounter challenges (SLO8).
Discussion Topic(s)
Using reliable online sources, locate a restorative justice program in the United States.
In your response:
- Briefly describe the program, including where it operates and the population it serves.
- Explain how the program works to support offender accountability and reintegration after formal processing by the criminal justice system.
- Discuss any available outcome data or evaluation findings related to the program’s success or challenges (e.g., recidivism rates, participant satisfaction, community impact). If hard data are unavailable, cite credible sources that describe program evaluations or stakeholder perspectives.
- Hypothesize why this program has been successful or faced challenges, using criminological concepts and restorative justice principles.
Your response should emphasize analysis and practitioner relevance rather than simple description.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
- Use AI to help locate restorative justice programs or clarify program descriptions. Do not use AI to generate your discussion response.
- Use AI to identify outcome measures or evaluation frameworks used in restorative justice research, then independently analyze how they apply to your selected program.
Directions
Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.
- Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
- Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
- Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
Important Reminder
Important: Submitting incomplete or placeholder responses may result in a grade deduction based on course policies.
