Overview

In this final research paper, you will analyze terrorism through a practitioner-focused lens by applying course concepts related to terrorism forms, preparedness, response, legal frameworks, and evolving threats to a real-world case.

You will select a terrorist attack, sustained campaign of terrorist activity, or terrorist organization and develop a structured research paper that examines prevention, response, consequence management, legal accountability, and future policy considerations. This assignment is designed to strengthen your ability to conduct academic research, evaluate terrorism response strategies, and communicate your analysis in clear APA 7th edition format.

Assignment Topic

Select one case as the primary focus of your paper. You may choose one of the following:

  • A terrorist attack
  • A sustained campaign of terrorist activity
  • A terrorist organization

Your paper must address the following required areas of analysis as integrated sections of a cohesive research paper:

  • Nature and Form of Terrorism: Explain how your case illustrates the nature of terrorism and its forms. Identify domestic, international, transnational, ideological, religious, or hybrid characteristics. Explain why classification matters for response and policy.
  • Risk Reduction and Prevention: Analyze policies, programs, or strategies designed to reduce the risk of similar activity. Consider intelligence, community engagement, online counter-radicalization, or infrastructure protection.
  • Response and Consequence Management: Evaluate how authorities responded to the event or threat. Address law enforcement, emergency management, intelligence, military, and interagency coordination. Identify strengths, limitations, and lessons learned.
  • Legal Frameworks and Accountability: Examine U.S. laws used to combat or punish terrorism as they relate to your case. Compare with one other country’s legal approach, focusing on authority, civil liberties, and enforcement mechanisms.
  • Terrorism vs. Guerrilla Movements: Distinguish terrorism from guerrilla movements using specific examples. Address goals, tactics, and legitimacy claims.
  • Future Policy and Program Considerations: Propose future policies or programs to improve prevention, response, or deradicalization. Address emerging challenges such as online radicalization, lone actor threats, domestic extremism, or intelligence limitations.

  • Your paper should be 6–8 pages of content, double-spaced. The Title Page and Reference Page do not count toward the required page length.
  • Use Times New Roman, 12-point font, 1-inch margins, and APA 7th edition format throughout the paper.
  • Your paper must include a clear introduction, thesis, organized body sections, and a conclusion.
  • Use a minimum of 6 credible sources, including at least 3 scholarly sources.
  • Use direct quotations carefully. Direct quotes should make up no more than 10–15% of the paper. Prioritize your own analysis.
  • Build your paper around evidence and practitioner-focused analysis.
  • Avoid detailed tactical descriptions of violence. Focus on prevention, response, legal authority, policy, and consequences.
  • Proofread your work for clarity, organization, grammar, and overall quality before submission.

  • Submit your final research paper through the designated Brightspace submission area.
  • Submit your file as a .docx or .pdf unless otherwise directed by the instructor.
  • Review the grading rubric before submitting your work.
  • Verify that your paper includes APA in-text citations and a complete APA Reference Page.
  • Submit your final paper by the deadline listed in the syllabus.
