Overview
Ideological movements in the United States have taken many forms across time, including right wing, left wing, and separatist or nationalist movements. While these movements differ in ideology and goals, they often share patterns related to grievance, identity, recruitment, and mobilization.
In this learning activity, you will analyze one ideological movement using a short recorded presentation. The goal is not to recount history, but to examine how the movement developed, how it mobilized supporters, and why it matters for modern terrorism prevention and response.
Student Learning Objectives

  • LO1: Examine the characteristics and development of ideological movements in the United States (SLO1)
  • LO2: Analyze how right wing, left wing, and separatist movements mobilize support and identify implications for terrorism prevention and response (SLO3)
Presentation Topic
Select one of the following ideological movement categories and identify a specific U.S. based example within that category:
  • White supremacist or racist extremist movements
  • Religious nationalist or identity based extremist movements
  • Left wing extremist movements
  • Separatist or nationalist movements
Note: Your selected example must be historically documented and supported by credible sources.
Your recorded presentation should address the following points:
  1. Briefly identify the movement and its ideological foundation. Keep background concise.
  2. Explain the primary grievances or narratives used to mobilize supporters.
  3. Analyze how the movement recruited, organized, or sustained participation over time.
  4. Identify indicators that practitioners might use to assess risk or escalation associated with similar movements today.
  5. Conclude with one practitioner focused takeaway related to prevention, monitoring, or response.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your presentation.

  • Your presentation should be 8-10 slides, using APA style, including 12 font and 1-inch margins.
  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
  • You are expected to have detailed speaker notes.
  • Submissions are checked against a Plagiarism Checker and AI Detector.
    • Direct quotes should not exceed 15% of the total paper.
    • AI Usage – you must use AI ethically. Papers written by an AI is cheating.

  • Submit your presentation through the designated submission area.
  • Ensure your file is in [accepted format: PowerPoint, PDF, video, etc.].
  • Review the grading rubric before submitting your work.
