Overview
Deradicalization has become an increasingly important component of counterterrorism and violent extremism prevention efforts. Programs designed to disengage individuals from extremist ideologies vary widely in approach, effectiveness, and ethical complexity. Manuel Valis’ 80 Point Deradicalization Strategies provides a comprehensive framework for understanding how intervention, rehabilitation, and reintegration efforts may function in practice.
In this learning activity, you will critically evaluate deradicalization strategies and assess whether, when, and under what conditions deradicalization efforts are likely to succeed.

  • Identify and explain key themes or approaches within Manuel Valis’ 80 Point Deradicalization Strategies. Focus on strategy categories rather than listing individual points.
  • Using these strategies, present two evidence based arguments that support the potential effectiveness of deradicalization efforts.
  • Present two evidence based limitations or challenges associated with deradicalization programs, such as ideological commitment, social reinforcement, recidivism risk, or measurement of success.
  • Based on your analysis, assess under what conditions deradicalization is most likely to be effective and when alternative approaches may be more appropriate.
  • From a practitioner perspective, what indicators would suggest that a deradicalization effort is progressing successfully?

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
