Overview
Terrorism and mass media often exist in a mutually reinforcing relationship. High profile attacks are frequently followed by continuous media coverage that shapes public perception, political pressure, and security responses. While media coverage serves an important public information function, it can also unintentionally amplify fear, legitimize extremist messaging, or extend the psychological impact of an attack.
In this learning activity, you will examine media coverage of a major terrorist attack and analyze how media framing and repetition influence public reaction and terrorist strategy.

  • LO2: Analyze the role of media framing in shaping public response and counterterrorism decision making (SLO3)
Assignment Topic
  • Briefly identify the key events and actors involved in the selected terrorist attack referenced in the assigned media coverage. Focus on context rather than graphic detail.
  • Analyze why terrorist organizations employ strategies that are likely to generate intense media attention. What objectives are they seeking to achieve beyond immediate physical harm?
  • How did media coverage shape public perception, emotional response, or political discourse following the attack? Provide specific examples from the coverage.
  • From a practitioner perspective, what role should media outlets and public officials play in informing the public without amplifying fear or extremist messaging?
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to identify common media framing techniques used during coverage of terrorist attacks and organize them into analytical categories. Do not reproduce footage descriptions or sensational language.
  • Use AI to evaluate alternative communication approaches that could inform the public while reducing the risk of fear amplification or extremist messaging.

  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
