Overview
Fundamentalism refers to a strict and literal interpretation of beliefs or principles and can exist across religious, political, and ideological systems. While fundamentalism does not automatically lead to violence, it can create conditions that, when combined with grievance, identity, and social reinforcement, contribute to extremist behavior.
In this discussion, you will examine what fundamentalism is, how it differs from extremism, and why similar patterns appear across ideologically diverse movements. The focus is on understanding behavioral and cognitive similarities rather than comparing belief systems themselves.

  • LO2: Analyze shared characteristics across extremist ideologies and assess how these similarities influence radicalization risk and response strategies (SLO7)
Discussion Topic(s)
  • What is fundamentalism, and how does it differ from extremism or terrorism? Why is it important for practitioners to distinguish between these concepts?
  • Identify key characteristics commonly associated with fundamentalist belief systems. How might these characteristics increase vulnerability to extremist messaging under certain conditions?
  • Compare Islamic fundamentalism with at least one other extremist ideology. What similarities exist in terms of structure, worldview, or grievance framing?
  • From a practitioner perspective, how can misunderstanding fundamentalism lead to ineffective or inappropriate counterterrorism responses?
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to generate a comparison framework that distinguishes belief, ideology, extremism, and violence.
  • Use the framework to organize your thinking, not to write your discussion post. Use AI to identify warning signs or escalation indicators that suggest movement from fundamentalist belief toward extremist behavior. Use this information to strengthen your practitioner analysis.

Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
