Overview
Violent extremist movements have drawn on a variety of ideological and religious frameworks, including interpretations of Islam and Christianity. While these ideologies differ significantly in theology and structure, extremist actors often share similar radicalization pathways, grievance narratives, and methods of justification.
In this discussion, you will compare how religious ideology is misused to support violence, examine common drivers of radicalization, and analyze why certain forms of extremism receive greater attention from law enforcement, media, and policy makers.

  • Compare how extremist actors have misused Islamic and Christian religious frameworks to justify violence.
  • What similarities and differences exist in how ideology is framed and applied? What social, psychological, or environmental factors commonly contribute to radicalization across different ideological movements?
  • Why do some forms of religiously motivated extremism receive greater attention from law enforcement agencies, policy makers, or the media? Consider factors such as threat scale, organizational structure, and historical context.
  • From a practitioner perspective, how can focusing too narrowly on one form of extremism create gaps in prevention or response efforts?
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to identify common radicalization factors across different ideological movements and organize them into categories such as grievance, identity, or social reinforcement. Do not insert AI generated text into your post.
  • Use AI to test bias and assumptions by asking how threat prioritization might shift under different risk or intelligence indicators. Use this exercise to refine your analysis.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two of their classmates (Peer Responses) using at least 150 words. Responses should encourage further dialogue in the discussion forum. Asking a classmate, a question is a nice way of furthering that dialogue.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main post will result in a 20-point deduction.
