Overview

Terrorism is defined differently across academic, legal, and international frameworks. While these definitions share common elements, they often diverge in ways that directly affect policy development, prosecution, and response strategies.

In this assignment, you will evaluate multiple definitions of terrorism drawn from the assigned readings and determine which definition is most effective for guiding real world terrorism response efforts. Your analysis should move beyond description and focus on how definitions influence decision making, authority, and operational clarity.

You are expected to support your position using the assigned readings and apply a practitioner focused lens rather than a purely theoretical one.

  • LO1: Examine competing definitions of terrorism and evaluate their core components and points of divergence (SLO1)
  • LO2: Analyze how definitional choices affect terrorism related policy development and response decision making (SLO2)
Assignment Topic
Using the assigned readings, compare at least two different definitions of terrorism, including the definition outlined in UN General Assembly Resolution 49/60.
In your paper, address the following:
  • Identify the core elements that appear across multiple definitions of terrorism.
  • Explain where and why these definitions diverge. Argue which definition is most useful for practitioners involved in terrorism response, prevention, or consequence management.
  • Discuss one potential limitation of your chosen definition when applied to modern or emerging terrorist threats.
Your paper should emphasize analysis, justification, and application, not summary.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Use AI to identify common elements across multiple terrorism definitions and organize them into comparison categories. Do not copy AI generated text into your paper.
  • Use AI to challenge your position by asking it to identify weaknesses or blind spots in the definition you selected. Use this feedback to strengthen your own analysis.

  • A minimum of at least two (2) sources, with proper APA citations in a Reference Page and proper in-text citations.
  • Abstract NOT needed.
