Module 7 Writing Assignment

Review the assignment overview, learning objectives, directions, and submission expectations before submitting your work.

Overview

Criminal law recognizes that mental illness can affect an individual’s ability to form criminal intent or understand the nature of their actions. Courts have developed several legal standards to evaluate insanity and related defenses, each reflecting different approaches to culpability, mental capacity, and fairness. These standards play a critical role in determining whether a defendant should be held criminally responsible or diverted from traditional punishment.

In this assignment, you will compose a complete case brief using the IRAC model, with specific attention given to the Analysis and Conclusion sections. You will also identify the primary defense or legal doctrine addressed in your assigned case, such as the M’Naghten Rule, irresistible impulse defense, substantial capacity test, diminished capacity, or entrapment. This activity strengthens your ability to analyze how courts assess mental state defenses and apply legal standards to complex factual circumstances.
