Overview

Courts play a critical role in ensuring that criminal laws comply with constitutional standards. When statutes or government actions are challenged, courts evaluate whether those laws violate constitutional limits such as due process, equal protection, or prohibitions on retroactive punishment. Understanding how courts apply these limits is essential for analyzing the legality of criminal statutes and government authority.

In this assignment, you will compose a complete case brief using the IRAC model, with specific attention given to the Analysis and Conclusion sections. You will also identify which constitutional principle is central to your assigned case, such as judicial review, strict scrutiny, ex post facto, void for vagueness, or equal protection. This activity reinforces your ability to apply constitutional doctrine, analyze judicial reasoning, and clearly explain how courts resolve constitutional challenges in criminal law.
