Overview

Policing is widely recognized as one of the most stressful professions in the criminal justice system. Officers routinely encounter dangerous situations, traumatic incidents, public scrutiny, shift work, and organizational pressures that can affect both job performance and personal well-being. Understanding the causes and consequences of stress is critical for maintaining officer wellness, improving decision-making, and promoting effective policing.

This activity asks you to evaluate competing perspectives regarding stress in law enforcement. You will analyze the sources of stress, their impact on officers and families, and whether stress should be viewed primarily as an individual responsibility or an organizational challenge.

Learning Objectives

  • LO1: Identify the major sources of stress experienced by law enforcement officers. (SLO5)
  • LO2: Evaluate how stress affects officer performance, decision-making, and personal relationships. (SLO5)
Prep Topic
  • Police officers face numerous stressors throughout their careers. Some experts argue that stress is primarily caused by the dangerous nature of police work, while others believe organizational and administrative factors create the greatest burden on officers.
  • Create a bullet list of arguments supporting both positions below.
  • Position A: The greatest source of police stress comes from operational duties such as responding to emergencies, exposure to violence, traumatic incidents, and the constant threat of danger.
  • Position B: The greatest source of police stress comes from organizational factors such as shift schedules, staffing shortages, administrative policies, supervision, paperwork, public criticism, and departmental politics.
  • Prepare at least five talking points supporting each position.
  • Consider issues such as:
    • Critical incidents and trauma
    • Officer safety concerns
    • Shift work and fatigue
    • Mandatory overtime
    • Administrative demands
    • Media scrutiny and public perception
    • Burnout
    • Family relationships
    • Mental health challenges
    • Substance abuse risks
    • Officer wellness programs
    • Decision-making under stress
  • After preparing arguments for both positions, identify what you believe is the single most effective strategy police departments could implement to reduce officer stress.
  • Be prepared to defend either position during the in-class debate regardless of your personal opinion.
Acceptable & Ethical Use of AI
  • You may use AI tools to help identify common stressors and wellness strategies within law enforcement; however, you should independently verify any information before including it in your prep activity.
  • If you use AI to assist with brainstorming or research, your final prep must reflect your own analysis, conclusions, and understanding of the course material.

  • This NOT a paper but rather talking points in bullets for our in-class meeting.
  • Abstract NOT needed.
  • Sources are NOT needed.
  • Submissions are checked against a Plagiarism Checker and AI Detector.
    • Direct quotes should not exceed 15% of the total paper.
    • AI Usage – you must use AI ethically. Papers written by an AI is cheating.
  • Stop over-thinking this activity. It should be a simple list of talking points.

  • Accepted formats include Word or PDF unless otherwise specified.
  • Review the grading rubric before submitting your work.
  • Submissions are checked using both a plagiarism checker and AI detection software.
  • Direct quotations should not exceed 15% of the total submission.
