Module Overview
In this module, you will examine the constitutional limitations placed on law enforcement officers and the legal protections afforded to individuals under the United States Constitution. Effective policing requires officers to balance public safety responsibilities with the constitutional rights guaranteed to citizens. Understanding these legal boundaries is essential for maintaining public trust and ensuring that criminal investigations are conducted lawfully.
Particular attention will be given to the Fourth Amendment and its protections against unreasonable searches and seizures. You will explore concepts such as probable cause, search warrants, consent searches, warrant exceptions, and the exclusionary rule. In addition, you will evaluate how courts balance individual rights against legitimate law enforcement interests when resolving constitutional disputes.
Through readings, discussions, and applied learning activities, you will analyze real-world legal scenarios, apply constitutional principles to law enforcement decisions, and assess the consequences of unlawful police conduct on criminal prosecutions.
