Overview

In this discussion, you will examine competing explanations of criminal behavior through the lens of major criminological schools of thought. Throughout the history of criminology, scholars have developed biological, psychological, sociological, classical, and neo-classical theories to explain why individuals engage in criminal behavior. Each perspective offers unique assumptions regarding human behavior, criminal motivation, personal responsibility, and social influences.

This activity asks you to evaluate several theories from your assigned theoretical perspective and defend their ability to explain criminal behavior. You will compare your chosen theories against competing perspectives and consider the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to understanding crime and criminality.

  • Review the group assignments below. The first letter of your last name determines your assigned theoretical perspective:
    • Group A-F: Sociological School
    • Group G-L: Psychological School
    • Group M-R: Biological School
    • Group S-Z: Neo-Classical & Classical School
  • Select at least three theories from your assigned group that you believe best explain why individuals commit crime.
  • Explain the major assumptions and principles of each theory you selected.
  • Provide examples demonstrating how each theory explains criminal behavior.
  • Evaluate the strengths of your selected theories and explain why they offer the most convincing explanation of crime.
  • Consider the limitations of competing theoretical perspectives and explain why your group’s theories provide a stronger explanation of criminal behavior.
  • Imagine that you are participating in a professional debate among criminologists. Your goal is to convince the class that your theoretical perspective provides the most effective explanation of criminal behavior.
  • Support your arguments with examples from the textbook, assigned readings, research, current events, or professional observations.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • You may use AI tools to help identify criminological theories and summarize key concepts; however, you should verify all information using your textbook and assigned course materials.
  • If you use AI to assist with brainstorming or research, your final discussion post must reflect your own analysis, evaluation, and defense of the theories selected for your assigned group.
Directions

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two classmates using at least 150 words for each response.
  • Peer Responses should challenge, support, or expand upon the theoretical arguments presented by classmates.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main Post will result in a 20-point deduction.
