Overview
In this discussion, you will examine how organizational structure influences the effectiveness, efficiency, and management of law enforcement agencies. Police organizations vary significantly in their administrative design, communication patterns, decision-making processes, and adaptability to changing community needs. Understanding these organizational models helps explain how agencies operate and respond to challenges.
This activity asks you to compare the Mintzberg Model with another organizational structure and evaluate which approach would best serve a fictional police department. You will consider how factors such as agency size, population served, education levels, technology integration, and organizational flexibility influence leadership decisions and police effectiveness.

Discussion Topic(s)
- Prepare a comparative analysis of the Mintzberg Model illustrated above and one of the following organizational structures: Simple Structure, Machine Bureaucracy, Professional Bureaucracy, Divisionalized Structure, or Adhocracy.
- You have just been hired as Chief of Police for the fictional town of Ganymede. The police department currently operates using the Mintzberg Model.
- Develop realistic demographics for your agency, including agency size, population served, educational backgrounds of officers and supervisors, and technology interoperability capabilities.
- Compare the strengths and weaknesses of the Mintzberg Model against your selected organizational structure.
- If you were Chief of Police, which organizational model would you choose for the Ganymede Police Department and why?
- What advantages does the Mintzberg Model provide to a modern police agency?
- What advantages does your selected organizational model provide?
- How would factors such as leadership, communication, technology integration, officer discretion, community expectations, and organizational flexibility influence your decision?

- If AI is used to assist with brainstorming, your final discussion must reflect your own evaluation, analysis, and leadership decisions regarding police administration and organizational design.
