Module 2 Discussion Activity
Review the discussion overview, learning objectives, prompt, and participation expectations before posting.
Overview
In this discussion, you will compare law enforcement in the United States with law enforcement in another country. Police systems are shaped by history, government structure, legal traditions, culture, political conditions, community expectations, and public safety needs. By comparing policing across countries, you can better understand the strengths and limitations of different law enforcement models.
This activity asks you to analyze similarities and differences between the United States and one selected country. You will also evaluate whether any aspects of that country’s law enforcement system should serve as a model for improving policing in the United States.
Learning Objectives
(These are not the questions to be answered. Please review and answer the Discussion Topic(s).)
- LO1: Compare the organization, structure, and responsibilities of law enforcement in the United States with law enforcement in another country. (SLO2)
- LO2: Examine how historical, political, cultural, and social factors shape contemporary policing practices in different countries. (SLO6)
Discussion Topic(s)
- Using your assigned readings and outside research, compare law enforcement in the United States with law enforcement in one of the following countries: China, Brazil, Iraq, or Russia.
- What are the major similarities between law enforcement in the United States and the country you selected?
- What are the major differences between law enforcement in the United States and the country you selected?
- Consider issues such as police organization, national versus local control, police authority, training, accountability, public trust, community relations, use of force, political influence, corruption, technology, or human rights concerns.
- Imagine that your instructor has just been appointed the U.S. Secretary of Law Enforcement. Your task is to convince the Secretary whether the United States should or should not model any part of its law enforcement system after the country you selected.
- Which specific practices, policies, or structures from the country you selected would you recommend adopting, modifying, or avoiding? Explain your reasoning.
- Support your response with examples from the assigned readings, credible Internet sources, current events, or real-world policing practices.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
- You may use AI tools to help identify comparison points between the United States and another country’s law enforcement system; however, you must verify information using assigned readings and credible sources.
- If you use AI to help organize your ideas, your final post must reflect your own analysis and conclusions. Do not rely on AI-generated claims without checking accuracy, context, and source credibility.
