Module 14 Discussion Activity

Review the discussion overview, learning objectives, prompt, and participation expectations before posting.

Overview

In this discussion, you will examine how emerging technologies are shaping the future of policing and criminal investigations. Law enforcement agencies are increasingly adopting advanced technologies to address complex crimes, improve investigative efficiency, enhance public safety, and respond to evolving threats in the digital age. Many of these technologies are currently being tested through pilot programs, while others are expected to become common tools in policing over the next decade.

As criminal activity becomes more technologically sophisticated, law enforcement agencies must develop new capabilities to investigate cybercrime, financial crimes, identity theft, cryptocurrency fraud, artificial intelligence-assisted crimes, and other offenses that often cross jurisdictional and international boundaries. Understanding the opportunities and challenges presented by emerging technologies is essential for criminal justice professionals preparing for the future of policing.

Learning Objectives

(These are not the questions to be answered. Please review and answer the Discussion Topic(s).)

  • LO1: Examine factors that shape contemporary policing and future law enforcement practices. (SLO6)
  • LO2: Analyze how emerging technologies may influence criminal investigations, crime prevention, and public safety. (SLO6)
Discussion Topic(s)
  • Using credible internet sources, identify and discuss three emerging technologies that are currently being tested, piloted, or planned for future use in law enforcement.
  • For each technology, explain:
    • What the technology is and how it works.
    • Its intended purpose within law enforcement.
    • The benefits it may provide investigators, officers, or communities.
    • The challenges, limitations, or concerns associated with its use.
  • Particular attention should be given to technologies being developed to address:
    • Cybercrime and computer-related offenses.
    • Financial crimes and fraud.
    • Identity theft.
    • Cryptocurrency investigations.
    • Digital evidence collection and analysis.
    • Artificial intelligence-assisted crimes.
    • Other complex or emerging criminal threats.
  • Examples of technologies that may be explored include:
    • Artificial Intelligence (AI) investigative tools.
    • Predictive analytics and machine learning systems.
    • Blockchain and cryptocurrency tracing technologies.
    • Digital forensic platforms.
    • Facial recognition systems.
    • Autonomous drones and robotic policing technologies.
    • Real-time crime centers.
    • Advanced cyber threat intelligence systems.
    • Behavioral analytics and fraud detection software.
    • Quantum computing applications in criminal investigations.
    • Automated license plate recognition systems.
    • Next-generation biometric technologies.
  • You must identify and share one video resource with the class that demonstrates or explains one of the technologies discussed in your post.
  • Evaluate whether the benefits of these technologies outweigh potential concerns regarding privacy, civil liberties, bias, transparency, accountability, or government surveillance.
  • Which of the three technologies do you believe will have the greatest impact on policing during the next decade? Explain your reasoning.
  • Support your discussion with course materials, professional sources, government reports, academic research, and your independent research.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • You may use AI tools to help identify emerging law enforcement technologies and locate relevant research; however, you must verify all information using credible professional, governmental, academic, and industry sources.
  • If you use AI to assist with research or brainstorming, your final discussion post must reflect your own analysis of the technologies, their effectiveness, and their implications for the future of policing.
Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.

  • Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
  • Students must reply to at least two classmates using at least 150 words for each response.
  • Peer Responses should evaluate the technologies presented, discuss additional applications, or analyze potential ethical and legal concerns.
  • Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main Post will result in a 20-point deduction.
Important Reminder

Important: Submitting incomplete or placeholder responses may result in a grade deduction based on course policies.
