Overview

In this discussion, you will examine the growing role of private security and private policing within modern society. As gated communities, corporate campuses, critical infrastructure sites, hospitals, universities, transportation systems, and private businesses expand their security needs, private security personnel increasingly perform functions once associated primarily with public law enforcement agencies. Today, private security professionals outnumber sworn police officers in many jurisdictions and play a significant role in crime prevention, asset protection, intelligence gathering, risk management, and emergency response.

This activity asks you to explore the future of private policing and evaluate how private security positions contribute to public safety. You will also examine the qualifications, responsibilities, and compensation associated with specialized private security careers while considering the broader implications of relying on private organizations to perform security-related functions.

  • Gated communities continue to grow in popularity, and with this growth comes an increased demand for private security services. What do you believe is the future of private policing in the United States and globally?
  • What factors are contributing to the growth of private security and private policing?
  • How do the responsibilities of private security personnel differ from those of public law enforcement officers?
  • What advantages and disadvantages exist when private organizations assume greater responsibility for crime prevention, investigations, intelligence gathering, and security operations?
  • Could private policing eventually replace some traditional police functions? Why or why not?
  • Using credible internet sources, research and analyze two specialized private security careers. Do not use mall security, retail loss prevention, or other entry-level security positions.
  • For each position, provide:
    • The job title and employer or industry sector.
    • A summary of the primary job duties and responsibilities.
    • Required education, certifications, licenses, experience, or specialized training.
    • The salary range or pay scale.
    • The major skills needed for success in the position.
