Module 11: Homeland Security, the Patriot Act, and the War on Drugs
Review all module materials and expectations carefully before beginning your work.
Module Overview
In this module, you will examine how law enforcement agencies respond to national security threats, terrorism, and large-scale criminal activity. Following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the role of law enforcement expanded significantly as federal, state, and local agencies became increasingly involved in homeland security efforts, intelligence sharing, and counterterrorism operations.
You will explore the provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act and evaluate the ongoing debate between protecting national security and preserving individual civil liberties. In addition, you will examine the historical development of the War on Drugs, its intended goals, and its long-term impact on crime, incarceration, public health, and criminal justice policy. Throughout the module, you will consider how policymakers balance public safety concerns with constitutional rights and individual freedoms.
Through readings, discussions, and applied learning activities, you will analyze major public policy initiatives, assess their effectiveness, and evaluate their impact on law enforcement, communities, and society as a whole.
Important: Carefully review all module materials, instructions, and grading expectations before beginning any activity.
