Module Overview
In this module, you will examine ethics, values, morality, and professional accountability within law enforcement. Police officers are entrusted with significant authority and discretion, making ethical decision-making an essential component of effective policing. Public trust depends on the ability of officers and agencies to act lawfully, fairly, and ethically while serving their communities.
You will explore the differences between morals, ethics, and values and examine how individual beliefs, organizational culture, and societal expectations influence police behavior. Particular attention will be given to police corruption, misconduct, group dynamics, herd mentality, and the challenges officers face when ethical responsibilities conflict with occupational loyalties and organizational pressures.
Through readings, discussions, case studies, and applied learning activities, you will analyze ethical dilemmas in policing, evaluate the consequences of misconduct, and assess the importance of accountability mechanisms in maintaining public confidence in law enforcement.
