Northern Essex Community College
Module 1 Discussion Activity
Review the discussion overview, learning objectives, prompt, and participation expectations before posting.
Overview
In this discussion, you will examine how the role of policing has evolved throughout American history and how changing community expectations continue to shape law enforcement responsibilities today. You will explore how historical developments, social needs, and community expectations have influenced the services provided by police agencies.
This activity asks you to analyze and apply course concepts by connecting historical policing practices to modern law enforcement responsibilities. Consider real-world examples of how police officers engage in activities that extend beyond traditional crime control and public safety functions.
Learning Objectives
(These are not the questions to be answered. Please review and answer the Discussion Topic(s).)
- LO1: Explain how the role and responsibilities of police officers have evolved throughout the history of American policing. (SLO1)
- LO2: Examine contemporary social and community factors that influence the duties and expectations of modern law enforcement agencies. (SLO6)
Discussion Topic(s)
- During the 19th Century, police departments often provided social services such as emptying public privies and removing garbage. What types of social services do law enforcement officers provide today?
- Why do you think communities continue to rely on police officers to respond to many non-criminal issues?
- Should police agencies continue serving in these expanded roles, or should some responsibilities be transferred to other government agencies or community organizations? Explain your reasoning.
- Provide at least one real-world example of a modern policing responsibility that extends beyond traditional crime fighting and discuss its impact on the community.
- Support your response with examples from the readings, your observations, professional experiences, or current events.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
- You may use AI tools to help identify examples of modern social service functions performed by police agencies; however, you should independently verify any information before including it in your discussion.
- If you use AI to assist with brainstorming or research, your final discussion post must reflect your own analysis, conclusions, and understanding of the course material.
Directions
Please read all instructions carefully before participating in the discussion.
- Students must complete one Main Post that answers the discussion topic using more than 250 words.
- Students must reply to at least two classmates using at least 150 words for each response.
- Peer Responses should extend the conversation by adding insight, asking questions, or offering alternative perspectives.
- Students must first compose an original Main Post to gain access to the discussion forum. Attempts to post a blank initial post or anything other than the true Main Post will result in a 20-point deduction.
Important Reminder
Important: Submitting incomplete or placeholder responses may result in a grade deduction based on course policies.
