Overview

This assignment demonstrates your ability to connect theory, practice, and policy in corrections. It strengthens research, analysis, and professional communication skills you will use in advanced coursework and criminal justice careers.

Student Learning Objectives

These are not questions. These are the expectations you will demonstrate that you have gained this knowledge over the past 14 weeks.

  • SLO1: Describe the foundations of American corrections, including history, goals, organizational structure, and offenders.
  • SLO2: Identify the major components of the correctional system: probation, parole, jails, and prisons.
  • SLO3: Analyze the current state of correctional practices at the local levels, including jails, HOCs, probation, intermediate sanctions, and community supervision.
  • SLO4: Examine the punitive mechanism of institutional corrections, including prisons at the state and federal level, the prison experience, and prison management.
  • SLO5: Understand the unique correctional needs of special populations managed within the correctional system.
  • SLO6: Identify contemporary issues and trends in correctional discussions.
Skills

Completing this Research Paper/Project will allow you to demonstrate the following skills:

  • Academic research and APA citation
  • Critical analysis of correctional practices and trends
  • Communication through a paper or multimedia project
  • Ethical integration of AI in academic and professional work
Assignment Topic

Choose one of the following options:

Option 1: Research Paper

  • 8–10 pages.
  • APA style required.
  • Title page and reference page are not included in the page count.
  • Minimum of 3 credible references, scholarly or government.
  • Must explicitly tie research to all six SLOs.

Option 2: Creative Research Project

  • A video, podcast, website, or infographic project.
  • Must include an annotated script or outline equal to 8–10 pages of research content.
  • Must explicitly tie research to all six SLOs.
Suggested Topics

Students are free to select one of the topics below:

  • Restorative justice and its role in reducing incarceration.
  • Privatization of prisons and correctional ethics.
  • Veterans’ courts or mental health courts as alternatives.
  • Correctional officer subculture and wellness.
  • Racial and ethnic disparities in sentencing and incarceration.
  • LGBTQ+ rights and gender-identity accommodations in prison.
  • The impact of AI and predictive analytics on sentencing and corrections.
  • Juveniles in the adult system.
  • Reentry and recidivism reduction programs.
  • Death penalty and the use of lethal injection drugs.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI

AI tools such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, Canva, Adobe Express, and similar tools may be used for brainstorming, outlining, editing, or presentation design. Students must document how they used AI and critically evaluate its accuracy. AI cannot replace original critical analysis.

Example applications include:

  • Brainstorming and narrowing research topics
  • Drafting outlines and scripts
  • Generating visuals, infographics, or cover art
  • Assisting with APA formatting
  • Captioning videos or producing transcripts

Students must include a short reflection describing how they ethically used, or chose not to use, AI.

Directions

Please read all instructions carefully before submitting your Research Paper/Project.

  • Select either the Research Paper option or the Creative Research Project option.
  • Choose a correctional issue or topic that allows you to address all six course SLOs.
  • Use at least 3 credible references, such as scholarly sources or government sources.
  • Clearly connect your research, analysis, or project content to all six SLOs.
  • If completing the paper option, follow APA style and submit an 8–10 page paper, not including the title page and reference page.
  • If completing the creative project option, include an annotated script or outline equal to 8–10 pages of research content.
  • Include a short AI reflection explaining how you ethically used AI or explaining that you chose not to use AI.
  • Proofread your work for clarity, organization, grammar, and overall quality before submission.
Criteria for Success
  • Addresses all six SLOs in meaningful ways.
  • Includes a clear thesis and logical organization.
  • Integrates at least 3 credible references.
  • Uses APA formatting for papers or professional-quality design for projects.
  • Includes transparent documentation of AI use.
Submission Guidelines
  • Submit your assignment through the designated submission area.
  • Research papers should be submitted in Word or PDF format unless otherwise specified.
  • Creative projects should include the project file or link and the required annotated script or outline.
  • Review the grading rubric before submitting your work.
  • Make sure your AI reflection is included before submitting.
