As you complete this module, take time to reflect on how correctional systems balance the needs of diverse inmate populations while maintaining institutional safety and security. You have examined issues involving aging offenders, healthcare, prison culture, correctional staff, rehabilitation, and institutional management. These topics highlight the complexity of modern corrections and the challenges correctional professionals face every day. In the final module, you will build on this knowledge by examining prison gangs, prisoners’ rights, and other contemporary issues that continue to shape correctional policy and practice. You will also have the opportunity to demonstrate your overall understanding of corrections through the course capstone project.
Looking Ahead
In the next module, you will conclude your study of corrections by exploring Security Threat Groups (STGs), prisoners’ rights, and contemporary correctional issues. You will examine how prison gangs influence correctional environments, evaluate strategies used to manage and disrupt gang activity, and analyze legal and ethical issues surrounding inmate rights, healthcare, religion, and gender identity. The module will also culminate with a capstone project that allows you to apply what you have learned throughout the course to a real-world correctional issue.
