Module 6: Special Populations, Prison Life, and Institutional Safety
Review all module materials and expectations carefully before beginning your work.
Module Overview
This module examines the dual challenges of managing special populations and the broader dynamics of prison life. Students will explore how correctional systems adapt to the needs of aging inmates and those with chronic health conditions or disabilities, considering the implications of mandatory sentencing laws, longer incarceration periods, and rising medical and housing costs. Policy responses such as specialized services, compassionate release, and ethical debates over care will be analyzed to understand how corrections balances security, cost, and human dignity.
At the same time, the module focuses on the lived experience of incarceration, institutional safety, and the role of correctional culture. Students will assess the causes and consequences of prison riots—such as the Attica uprising—and evaluate how staff subcultures, including the code of silence, affect institutional safety for both officers and inmates. The human experience of incarceration will also be considered through the lens of rehabilitation, highlighting the role of educational and treatment programs in shaping prison environments and influencing outcomes for incarcerated individuals.
Important: Carefully review all module materials, instructions, and grading expectations before beginning any activity.
