Overview
This discussion focuses on institutional safety and correctional culture through the lens of the 1971 Attica riot and its legacy. Students will consider how correctional staff practices, officer wellness, and the code of silence affect safety today, and how prisons can balance institutional security with humane treatment of inmates.
