Overview

Students will write policy brief analyzing correctional treatment models, including the treatment model, reintegration/reentry approaches, and vocational rehabilitation. They will evaluate whether correctional treatment is justified based on public safety, cost-effectiveness, and correctional goals, while proposing improvements.

  • LO1: Summarize the historical debate on treatment in corrections and its evolution to modern evidence-based practices. (SLO1, SLO4)
  • LO2: Assess the role of cost-benefit and recidivism data in shaping correctional policy recommendations. (SLO3, SLO6)
Assignment Topic
  • Using Annis (1981), Zane et al. (2023), NIJ (2023), and SAMHSA TIP 44, discuss how correctional treatment has evolved from Martinson’s ‘nothing works’ perspective to contemporary evidence-based practices.
  • Conclude with three policy recommendations for balancing custody, rehabilitation, and reintegration.
Acceptable and Ethical Use of AI
  • Ask AI to outline the major stages in the debate over treatment in corrections and propose key turning points.
  • Ask AI to develop a list of three evidence-based recommendations for correctional policy, then validate these with course readings.
