Module Overview

This module explores the history, populations, organization, and challenges of jails and prisons in the United States. Students will begin by tracing the historical development of jails, examining the various types that exist, and analyzing the demographic and statistical characteristics of jail populations. Contemporary issues such as overcrowding, staffing shortages, and jail standards will be considered, along with how these challenges affect both incarcerated individuals and correctional personnel.

The module then expands to the broader U.S. prison system, focusing on the growth and classification of institutions at different security levels. Students will explore the demographics of prison populations, compare organizational structures across several state correctional systems, and examine the history, mission, and management of the Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP). Special attention will also be given to the controversial role of private prisons and their impact on correctional philosophy and practice.
